The Chicago Bears have spent the past year trying to build a running-back room that can survive the grind of an 18-game season and the physical demands of Ben Johnson’s scheme.
That plan took another hit this week when Kyle Monangai, the seventh-round pick who looked like a steal last April, remained week-to-week with a hyperextended right knee.
His availability for the September 13 opener against Carolina is now an open question, and the front office responded the way good teams do when depth is threatened: they went shopping in the NFC North and came home with Zavier Scott.
Scott spent last season with the Minnesota Vikings, appearing in all 16 games and logging 254 snaps between offense and special teams. He was not a featured back, finishing with 32 carries for 114 yards and 14 receptions for 98 yards and a score, but the tape showed a runner who can create chunk plays when given a crease. That trait matters in Chicago.
Johnson’s offense finished third in the league in rushing last year at 144.5 yards per game and sixth overall at 369.2 yards per game, and the coaching staff has been clear that explosive runs are a priority. Scott’s ability to hit the second level quickly gives him a chance to climb the depth chart if Monangai’s recovery stretches longer than hoped.
The signing also carries a little extra satisfaction because Minnesota wanted him back. After cutting Scott to reach the 53-man roster, the Vikings planned to stash him on their practice squad.Chicago simply got there first.
In a division where every roster spot is contested, taking a player the rival still valued is the kind of small victory that resonates with Bears fans.
D’Andre Swift remains the clear starter and is entering the final year of his deal. Roschon Johnson is on the roster but has a concussion history and barely touched the ball last season.
Salvon Ahmed is already on the practice squad. Scott now joins that group as another option who can contribute on special teams while waiting for an opening. If Monangai returns healthy, Scott is likely the third-string back. If the knee lingers, he suddenly becomes relevant in Week 1.
None of this is ideal. A promising young runner on a cheap contract sitting out the start of the season is not how anyone drew it up. But the Bears have shown they will not sit still when the backfield thins out.
Signing Scott from under the Vikings’ nose is a reminder that this front office is paying attention to both the injury report and the waiver wire.
For a team that wants to stay physical on the ground all year, that kind of opportunism is exactly what the moment required.
