The Atlanta Braves will open a weekend homestand against the Colorado Rockies with fresh momentum and one small but telling roster adjustment already complete.
After sweeping the Los Angeles Dodgers and stretching their winning streak to four games, the club remains at Truist Park. Hours before the series began, Atlanta optioned right-hander Duncan Davitt from Triple-A Gwinnett to Double-A Columbus.
The corresponding move followed the Braves’ recent waiver claim of pitcher Ricky Vanasco from the Detroit Tigers. Vanasco’s activation at the Triple-A level required a roster spot, and Davitt became the player sent down.
Transactions of this kind rarely generate headlines, yet they reveal how quickly an organization reshuffles depth once a new arm arrives.
Davitt, 26, is still new to the Atlanta system. Earlier this month the Braves acquired him from the Chicago White Sox in a deal that sent catcher Joey Bart the other way.
With Chicago he made his major-league debut this season, working two innings and allowing one earned run. Those two innings remain his only big-league work.
His minor-league numbers in 2026 have been uneven. Across more than 66 innings at the Triple-A level he compiled a 6.24 ERA, 69 strikeouts and a 1.20 WHIP.
After joining Gwinnett he threw seven innings with a 6.43 ERA. Those results, combined with Vanasco’s arrival, made the assignment to Columbus a straightforward organizational choice.
It is unlikely Davitt will return to the majors this season. Atlanta’s starting and relief corps have shown enough consistency during the current streak that a 26-year-old with limited big-league experience and mixed Triple-A results is not an immediate need.
Double-A Columbus offers a lower-pressure setting in which he can work on command and perhaps regain some of the strikeout ability he displayed earlier in the year.
For a contending club the move is routine mid-August housekeeping. Depth arms move up and down as new pieces arrive and as the front office evaluates who belongs at each level.
Vanasco’s presence on the 40-man roster simply tipped the scale in this instance. The Rockies series now gives the Braves another chance to extend their hot streak at home.
While few fans will notice Davitt’s demotion, the transaction illustrates that even a four-game winning streak does not freeze the organization’s player-development calendar.
