Pittsburgh Pirates ace Paul Skenes has spent most of this season letting his pitching do the talking. That changed Thursday, when the right-hander broke a six-week social media silence with a four-word caption that immediately caught the attention of fans heading into a divisional series against the St. Louis Cardinals.
The post arrived on an off day after Pittsburgh took two of three from the San Diego Padres.
Skenes himself had just delivered one of his more encouraging outings of the year, throwing six scoreless innings in a 1-0 victory. He allowed only three hits and struck out four. It was his first scoreless start of that length since May 12 against the Colorado Rockies, a reminder of the dominance that made him a household name as a rookie.
Then came the Instagram caption: “It’s-a-me, Mario.” The Nintendo reference was brief, playful, and typical of a pitcher who rarely shares much of himself online.
His girlfriend, gymnast and influencer Livvy Dunne, quickly replied with “Moon beam Paul Skenes.” The exchange has already drawn more than 51,000 likes and a couple hundred comments. Skenes’ last previous post came during All-Star Weekend in Philadelphia, so the sudden appearance felt like a small event in itself.
On the field, Skenes remains an All-Star but has not quite recaptured the otherworldly numbers of his first two seasons. He is 9-11 with a 3.79 ERA.
Those figures would look excellent for most pitchers; they look merely solid next to the 1.96 and 1.97 ERAs he posted as a rookie and sophomore. The slight regression has been one of the quieter storylines of Pittsburgh’s year.
Skenes is not expected to start this weekend against the Cardinals. His next turn is more likely to come early next week when the Pirates face the San Francisco Giants. That extra rest may help him stay sharp as the schedule tightens.
The club itself sits at 65-70. Eighteen games separate Pittsburgh from first place in the National League Central, and the team is 7.5 games out of a Wild Card berth.
The mathematical possibility of a late surge still exists, but the margin for error is shrinking. A strong series against a familiar division rival would help keep the conversation alive.
Skenes’ lighthearted post will not change the standings. It does, however, offer a glimpse of personality from a pitcher who usually keeps the spotlight on the mound.
For a fan base that has watched him mature into one of baseball’s most recognizable faces, even four words can feel like a connection. The Cardinals series begins shortly.
Whether Skenes is in the rotation or not, the Pirates will need every bit of momentum they can find.
