The Atlanta Braves entered Sunday’s series finale against the Milwaukee Brewers looking for any spark that might halt a recent slide and prevent a sweep.

With the club having dropped five of its previous seven contests and its National League East lead showing signs of erosion, manager Walt Weiss decided a familiar face would occupy an unfamiliar spot in the batting order.

Michael Harris II, who had settled into the heart of the lineup as a consistent fourth or fifth hitter over recent months, was shifted to the leadoff role for the game.

The change places the speedy center fielder at the top of the order in a contest with extra meaning: the annual Little League Classic, staged in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Weiss moved Drake Baldwin into the fifth spot to accommodate the adjustment, while Ronald Acuña Jr. remained in the two-hole, followed by Matt Olson, Ozzie Albies, and the rest of a familiar supporting cast. Sean Murphy handled catching duties behind Tyler Mahle, who drew the starting assignment, with Baldwin serving as designated hitter.

The decision arrives at a delicate moment for Atlanta. A day of rest follows the Williamsport contest, but the schedule quickly turns demanding again with the Los Angeles Dodgers scheduled to arrive for a series.

Weiss’ willingness to experiment with Harris at the top of the order signals a desire to inject more athleticism and on-base potential into the early innings, hoping the young outfielder’s combination of contact skills and speed can set a different tone against Milwaukee’s pitching.

Harris has shown the ability to adapt throughout his young career, and this temporary move reflects both confidence in his versatility and an acknowledgment that the current approach has not produced the desired results of late.

Whether the leadoff experiment yields immediate dividends remains to be seen, yet it underscores the urgency surrounding a club that once appeared firmly in control of its division.

For one night in Williamsport, the Braves are banking on a change at the top of the card to help rewrite the narrative of a challenging stretch.

Harris is slashing .294/.321/.489 with 20 home runs and 70 RBI this season. The 25-year-old has been in the big leagues since 2021, when he won the NL Rookie of the Year award.

Atlanta entered Sunday’s action with a record of 75-55 and was trying to avoid a three-game sweep at the hands of the Brewers.
