The New York Mets will wrap up their weekend series against the Chicago White Sox on Sunday at Rate Field, looking to claim the set after the clubs split the first two games.
New York pulled out a 10-5 victory on Saturday, evening the series at one win apiece heading into the finale.
While the Mets focused on the field in Chicago, the club provided a fresh update on outfielder Juan Soto, who has remained sidelined since July 24 because of an injury.
MLB.com reported on Aug. 22 that Soto “Ran several wind sprints in the outfield on Aug. 14 but has not taken additional steps forward since that time. Has vowed to be back on the field before the season ends and should have more than enough time to do so.”
Officials indicated the star could still make it back sometime in September, giving him a realistic window before the regular season concludes.
Before the injury forced him out, Soto was hitting .283 with 83 hits, 21 home runs, 52 RBIs, 46 runs scored and seven stolen bases across 84 games.
The 2019 World Series champion is in the middle of his second year with the Mets after signing a massive free-agent deal. He previously spent time with the Washington Nationals, San Diego Padres and New York Yankees during his nine seasons in the majors.
Last year, Soto produced 43 home runs, 105 RBIs and 38 stolen bases while establishing himself as one of the game’s premier talents.
The 2026 campaign has proven difficult for the Mets despite a talented roster. New York entered Sunday sitting in last place in the National League East with a 59-71 mark through 130 games.
The struggles have kept the club far from contention, even as individual performances have offered occasional bright spots.
After completing the series in Chicago, the Mets will head home and open a series against the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night at Citi Field following an off day Monday.
Soto’s potential return remains a key storyline for a team searching for any late-season momentum. His presence in the lineup earlier this year provided consistent production at the plate and in the outfield.
Fans and teammates alike continue watching for further progress as September approaches and the schedule winds down.
The Mets hope the veteran’s determination translates into a successful return that could lift the club’s spirits in the final weeks.
