Detroit Tigers Finally Cut Ties With Former High Draft Pick

The Detroit Tigers have designated outfielder Trei Cruz for assignment, clearing a spot on the 40-man and active rosters for outfielder Brett Callahan, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Toledo.

Callahan made his big-league debut on Sunday.

Cruz, 28, had been recalled from Toledo just days earlier on August 13 but did not appear in a game during the brief stint.

The switch hitter previously reached the majors in mid-June 2026, becoming the fifth third-generation major leaguer when he debuted amid an injury to Wenceel Pérez. In two games that month he went 0-for-5 with three strikeouts before being optioned back to the minors.

Selected by the Tigers in the third round (73rd overall) of the 2020 MLB Draft out of Rice University, Cruz arrived with pedigree as the son of José Cruz Jr. and grandson of José Cruz.

Early projections highlighted his athleticism, plate discipline, switch-hitting ability, and defensive versatility across the infield and outfield.

Development proved slower and less productive than hoped. Across several minor-league seasons he posted modest overall numbers, with a career minor-league batting average in the .230s and limited power for much of his path.

A stronger 2025 campaign (.279/.411/.456 with 13 home runs between Double-A and Triple-A) earned him a 40-man roster spot that November to protect him from the Rule 5 draft, but 2026 brought further struggles at Triple-A and only fleeting big-league looks.

The designation marks a clear setback for a player long viewed as a potential organizational depth piece. Cruz will now be subject to waivers.

If he clears, the Tigers can outright him to Triple-A Toledo and retain him in the system. For a third-round pick from a loaded 2020 class that included higher-profile talents, the arc has largely been one of unfulfilled promise—solid tools and family lineage never fully translating into consistent production or a lasting major-league foothold.

The move reflects the Tigers’ need for fresh outfield options amid injuries and roster competition as they navigate the stretch run.

Cruz’s next opportunity, whether elsewhere or back in Toledo, will depend on how the waiver process unfolds.
