Penguins Predicted to Add $5.8 Million Veteran Before Season

The Pittsburgh Penguins appear set to add experienced depth in goal this offseason, according to one league analyst who sees a logical fit with a free-agent veteran still available on the market.

Arturs Silovs currently sits as the team’s projected starter after general manager Kyle Dubas handed him a one-year contract worth $2.8 million. The Latvian netminder turned in a mixed 2025-26 campaign, finishing with a 3.07 goals-against average and an .887 save percentage across 39 appearances.

Silovs shared the workload last season with Stuart Skinner. Both goaltenders started three games apiece during Pittsburgh’s playoff run. Skinner has since moved on, signing elsewhere and leaving Silovs as the lone established NHL option on the roster heading into the new year.

Behind Silovs, the Penguins are expected to give Sergei Murashov a look as the primary backup. The young Russian performed well in the American Hockey League but has seen only limited action at the NHL level so far. That limited experience has prompted speculation about another addition between the pipes.

Alex Chauvancy of The Hockey Writers recently projected that Pittsburgh will sign free-agent goaltender Connor Ingram, formerly of the Edmonton Oilers. Chauvancy pointed to Ingram’s regular-season form as a reason the move makes sense.

“Connor Ingram may have struggled during the playoffs for the Oilers, but he was arguably their best goaltender during the regular season,” Chauvancy wrote. “He finished with an .899 save percentage while saving 7.45 goals above expected. That’s an above-average netminder in today’s NHL. He could be a good stopgap until they deem Murashov ready for a full-time NHL role.”

Ingram hit unrestricted free agency after completing a three-year, $5.8 million contract in Edmonton. Chris Johnston of The Athletic ranked him the fifth-best available goaltender this summer and suggested a potential deal in the range of two years and $3 million total, or $1.5 million annually.

Despite those projections, Ingram remains unsigned deep into the offseason. Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal described the situation as unusual, noting that other clubs have pursued alternatives even when Ingram’s numbers compared favorably.

One example came from the Ottawa Senators, who acquired Samuel Ersson in a trade rather than pursuing Ingram, even though the former Oilers goalie posted stronger statistics during the 2025-26 season.

Pittsburgh sits in a strong position to act if it chooses. Cap trackers show the Penguins with roughly $11 million in available space under the salary ceiling. The roster is otherwise largely set, giving Dubas flexibility to address goaltending without major sacrifices elsewhere.

Head coach Dan Muse has shown a preference for sharing starts rather than leaning heavily on a single netminder. During the regular season, Silovs led the team with 38 starts while Skinner, who arrived in December, still received 27. That approach carried into the postseason as well.

Adding Ingram could ease the load on Murashov and provide insurance while the prospect continues to develop. Scott Wheeler of The Athletic recently listed Murashov as Pittsburgh’s sixth-ranked prospect, underscoring both his upside and the careful timeline the organization may prefer.

Some within the organization might prefer to evaluate Murashov thoroughly in training camp before committing to another veteran.

Still, the combination of available cap room, a coach who values tandem play, and Ingram’s remaining availability has kept the possibility of a signing in active discussion among observers.
