Sáez, a 19-year-old corner infielder, had been with the Cardinals for three seasons. Across 72 games and 228 at-bats in the organization, he posted a .184 batting average with three home runs, seven doubles, and a .596 OPS.
Those numbers fell well short of the offensive production the club typically seeks from prospects at that stage of development. Rodríguez, an 18-year-old pitcher from Guadalajara, Mexico, showed similar struggles on the mound.
In 17 innings over two seasons, he allowed 33 earned runs while recording just 13 strikeouts and a 3.53 WHIP. The lack of progress for both players made continued investment difficult to justify.
These releases occurred against the backdrop of a Cardinals team still theoretically alive in the National League wild-card picture, though the path remains steep.
The club has hovered near the .500 mark for much of the season, and any loss in the Cubs series would leave them several games behind the final playoff position with a number of contending teams to overtake. Inconsistency at the plate has been a recurring theme.
