The San Francisco 49ers suddenly find their wide-receiver room thinner than expected after Deebo Samuel suffered a hamstring injury that will sideline him for multiple games.
While Mike Evans delivered a strong outing with seven catches for 113 yards and a touchdown, the options behind him offer little comfort.
Brandin Cooks, Jacob Cowing and Jordan Watkins form a depth chart that has already drawn scrutiny, and the practice-squad group of Xavier Smith, Malik Turner, Wesley Grimes and Will Pauling does not project as a reliable long-term fix.
With the 49ers sitting at 5-0 and controlling their division, the timing has prompted some observers to argue that standing pat is no longer the safest path.
Rob Guerrera, host of the “Gold Standard 49ers Podcast” and an ESPN Radio personality, made that case forcefully during an appearance on FanDuel TV’s “Up & Adams.”
He urged general manager John Lynch to pursue a high-profile addition rather than hope the current group holds up.
“Hell yeah they should get aggressive — what are they waiting for?” Guerrera said. “You’re 5-0, you control the division now, you desperately need a wide receiver — I’m sorry, Jacob Cowing ain’t it, OK. You can’t just sit and wait and hope. Brandin Cooks stinks. I know he had a touchdown yesterday, but he doesn’t block anybody — they need somebody.”
He framed the moment as an opportunity for the organization in its tenth year under Kyle Shanahan and Lynch to prioritize the present over future draft capital. “Now is the time to be aggressive, almost recklessly aggressive,” he continued. “This is Year 10 of Shanahan and Lynch. You could say, ‘Well, we’ve got to save our draft picks.’ For what? Draft picks, the goal of those is to get you a Super Bowl down the line. Well, how about a Super Bowl this year?”
Guerrera specifically floated a call to the New York Jets about Garrett Wilson, the 26-year-old former Offensive Rookie of the Year who signed a four-year, $130 million extension last summer.
Wilson currently leads the Jets in receptions (31), yards (374) and touchdowns (3). Because New York lacks a franchise quarterback and appears several seasons from contention, Guerrera suggested the 49ers could open negotiations by offering their 2027 first-round pick—widely viewed as part of a strong draft class—along with an additional future selection.
“I would call the Jets up. Where are the Jets going? Nowhere fast,” he said. “It’s October — shocker the Jets’ season is over. What do you want for Garrett Wilson? You want a first-round pick? Let’s talk about it.”
He also named other potential targets, including Cleveland’s Jerry Jeudy, Jacksonville’s Brian Thomas Jr. and Washington’s Terry McLaurin, while arguing that the 49ers should aim for impact players who may not appear readily available.
“Go get someone that maybe you don’t think is available,” Guerrera added. “Everybody is available for the right price. That’s what I mean when I say be reckless. Yeah, maybe you’ll overpay a little, but go get somebody who’s good. Call Washington. What’s up with Terry McLaurin? Be aggressive and call every single general manager and see who’s out there.”
Whether Lynch follows that advice remains to be seen, but the combination of Samuel’s absence and a Super Bowl-contending roster has made the idea of a bold midseason move part of the conversation around the 49ers.
