The Boston Red Sox continued their series against the Toronto Blue Jays this week while making a low-key roster move on the organizational side.

Boston had already dropped the first two games of the four-game set and faced the challenge of trying to salvage something from the matchup on Wednesday.

In the middle of that series, the club quietly parted ways with a 24-year-old right-handed pitcher who had been pitching in the minor leagues.

The Red Sox released Jay Allmer from the organization, a transaction that drew little public attention at the time.

The move showed up clearly on his official transaction log: “Salem RidgeYaks released RHP Jay Allmer.”

Salem serves as one of Boston’s Single-A affiliates, and Allmer had spent most of his time at that level. He did receive a brief look at Double-A earlier this season but never advanced beyond that classification during his professional career.

Performance numbers this year help explain the decision. Allmer finished with a 10.30 ERA across 39.1 innings pitched in 2026.

That mark stood well above the typical thresholds clubs look for when evaluating young arms for retention.

Across his two minor-league seasons, Allmer compiled a 6.00 ERA in 93 total innings while recording just 63 strikeouts. Those figures left him with limited leverage as he became a free agent eligible to sign with any major-league organization.

Red Sox officials made no formal announcement about the release, consistent with how many similar lower-level moves are handled during the season.

Meanwhile, the big-league club continued to navigate a competitive American League landscape. Boston entered the week at 64-55, sitting nine games behind the division leader in the AL East.

That gap made catching the top team an uphill battle over the remaining schedule, yet the Red Sox remained firmly in the mix for an AL wild-card berth.

Recent form offered some encouragement. The club went 6-4 over its previous 10 games and carried a strong 35-24 record on the road into the Toronto series.

Those road numbers ranked among the better marks in the American League and provided a foundation for staying relevant in the postseason race.

Allmer’s departure leaves the organization with one fewer arm in the lower minors as it evaluates other pitching prospects for the stretch run and beyond.

Clubs often make such releases in August to clear roster spots and reduce payroll obligations at the affiliate level.

For Allmer, the next step involves exploring opportunities with other teams that might see upside in a young pitcher still early in his career.

The Red Sox, for their part, turn their focus back to the remaining games against Toronto and the broader push to secure October baseball.
