The Houston Astros added outfield depth Monday by claiming Nelson Velázquez off waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals, a move that came well after the MLB trade deadline had closed.
The Astros announced the acquisition of the 27-year-old right-handed hitter and simultaneously designated infielder Shay Whitcomb for assignment to clear a roster spot. Velázquez had been designated for assignment by the Cardinals two days earlier so the club could add Everson Pereira.
Chandler Rome of The Athletic first reported the claim.

Astros officials had been looking for additional right-handed bat options in the outfield, and Velázquez fits that need. He is expected to compete for playing time in a potential platoon role against left-handed pitching.
Velázquez appeared in more than 70 at-bats for St. Louis this season and hit .216 with four home runs and four doubles. The performance came during his first year with the Cardinals organization.
Houston remains in first place in the American League West even after falling to the San Diego Padres on Sunday night. The addition of Velázquez gives the club another experienced bat as it navigates the final stretch of the regular season.
Velázquez made his major league debut with the Chicago Cubs in 2022. He spent time with the Cubs over two seasons before moving to the Kansas City Royals, where he played 104 games across 2023 and 2024.
The 2026 season marked his arrival in St. Louis. Now he will prepare to suit up for a fourth different organization when he joins the Astros.
Across more than 620 career at-bats, Velázquez carries a .212 batting average. He has posted an OPS-plus of 98 while collecting 35 home runs, 25 doubles and 99 runs batted in.
His ability to handle left-handed pitching has drawn particular attention from teams seeking bench or platoon options. The Astros clearly saw value in that skill set when they placed the waiver claim.
Whitcomb’s designation for assignment means the Astros will have seven days to trade him, release him or outright him to the minor leagues if he clears waivers. The corresponding move allowed Houston to bring Velázquez into the organization immediately.
Waiver claims remain one of the few avenues available for teams to acquire major league talent once the trade deadline has passed. Activity on the waiver wire often increases in August as clubs adjust rosters for the stretch run and September call-ups.
Velázquez’s path through four organizations in a relatively short career illustrates the constant movement of role players in today’s game. From Chicago to Kansas City to St. Louis and now Houston, he has shown the ability to adapt to new environments.
Astros fans will watch closely to see how quickly he is activated and how manager Joe Espada deploys him. With the team still leading its division, every roster addition carries the potential to influence the club’s postseason push.
The transaction underscores Houston’s willingness to continue refining its roster even after the busiest trading period of the year has ended.
Velázquez now has the opportunity to contribute for a contending club in the final months of the 2026 season.
