The Atlanta Braves have officially released utility player Jorge Mateo, bringing an end to his brief tenure with the club just after their series against the New York Yankees.
Atlanta took the final game of that set on Sunday but had dropped the first two contests, leaving the team with mixed results heading into the next stretch of the schedule.
The roster move itself, however, was set in motion about a week earlier when the Braves designated Mateo for assignment in order to clear a spot for Ha-Seong Kim, who was coming off the injured list.
After spending time in the standard designation-for-assignment process, Mateo’s release became official.
The 31-year-old was in the middle of his first season in Atlanta, having signed a one-year contract during the offseason as the club looked to stabilize its shortstop situation.
In 65 games with the Braves he posted a .240 batting average with four home runs, 11 RBI and six doubles. Those numbers were modest, yet they still stood above the production Kim had managed in limited action this year. Mateo’s contract simply proved more expendable as the organization made its choice.
Mateo’s big-league career now spans parts of seven seasons.
He debuted with the San Diego Padres in 2019 after arriving as a highly regarded prospect and spent two years there before moving on to a five-year stretch with the Baltimore Orioles.
Across 552 career games and 1,432 at-bats he owns a .223 average, 34 home runs, 77 doubles and 12 triples, along with a lifetime OPS+ of 78. His mark with Atlanta sat at 82, reflecting the same limited offensive impact that has defined much of his career.
With the release, Mateo becomes a free agent once more. Given his defensive versatility and the solid if unspectacular contributions he provided Atlanta this season, he should find opportunities elsewhere without much difficulty.
The Braves, meanwhile, have made clear that he does not factor into their plans moving forward.
For a player who has bounced between organizations while carving out a steady if understated role, the next chapter will determine whether he can still carve out meaningful playing time in the majors.
