As fall camp opened this week behind the Allen Reeves Football Complex, Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney delivered a clear message about the state of his 2026 roster.
With more than 100 players on the field, No. 23 Clemson began preparations without a single designated starter.
“I don’t have any starters. I’m just going to tell you there ain’t nobody starting,” Swinney said, via The Clemson Insider.
The declaration marked a notable shift from previous seasons. In years past, Clemson routinely published a depth chart in its annual media guide.
This year, that document does not exist. Swinney emphasized that positions will be earned daily through performance rather than assumed based on past roles or expectations.
“Somebody’s going to run out there today because you got to go practice,” Swinney explained. “But we’re going to evaluate them every day and if you run out there first tomorrow, then that’s because you earned it today. Not because we just think you’re supposed to be the best one.”
Competition appears widespread across the roster. At quarterback, senior Christopher Vizzina entered camp in the lead, yet both Swinney and offensive coordinator Chad Morris have stressed that freshman Tait Reynolds presents a legitimate challenge for the starting role.
Similar battles are unfolding at running back, tight end, multiple spots along the offensive line, defensive tackle, and the linebacker position opposite Sammy Brown.
Swinney framed the situation as a reflection of the team’s overall depth and competitive environment.
“That’s just where we’re at. And that’s the type of competition that we have really, I think, at every position. And we got a lot of competition,” he said. “So, I don’t really have a depth chart. Don’t really have any starters to give you. I really don’t.”
The approach underscores a philosophy rooted in daily evaluation rather than predetermined hierarchy. Players will take the field in practice based on the previous day’s work, with nothing locked in until the season begins. That moment arrives on Sept. 5, when Clemson travels to Baton Rouge to face No. 13 LSU.
By withholding a formal depth chart and publicly rejecting the notion of established starters, Swinney has set a tone of urgency and accountability from the first day of camp.
Every position remains open, and every practice carries weight in determining who will ultimately take the field when the lights come on against the Tigers’ first opponent.
