The Georgia Bulldogs family is mourning the loss of one of its own. Norris Brown, a key contributor to the program’s golden era under Vince Dooley, passed away Friday at the age of 65.

Born July 10, 1961, in Laurens, South Carolina, Brown arrived in Athens as a hard-nosed tight end and left as a national champion.

From 1979 through 1982, he lined up in the red and black, helping deliver three straight Southeastern Conference titles and the crowning achievement of the 1980 season.

That year the Bulldogs went undefeated at 12-0, capped by a Sugar Bowl victory over Notre Dame that sealed the national championship. Brown shared the field with legends, most notably Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker, and became part of a roster still celebrated across Dawg Nation as one of the finest in school history.

His college success carried him into the professional ranks.

Selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the eighth round of the 1983 NFL Draft, Brown appeared in two regular-season games that fall before continuing his career in the United States Football League with the New Jersey Generals and later the Jacksonville Bulls.

Those years reflected the same toughness and reliability that defined his time in Athens.

For generations of Georgia fans, the 1980 team remains a touchstone.

Brown’s presence on that roster, and on the squads that followed, helped forge the identity of excellence that still echoes through Sanford Stadium.

His journey from small-town high school star to national champion embodied the grit and opportunity that have long drawn athletes to the University of Georgia.

While funeral arrangements have yet to be announced, the impact of his contributions endures.

Between the hedges, Brown will be remembered as a champion who helped write one of the proudest chapters in Bulldogs history. His legacy lives on in the memories of team
