Dallas Cowboys rookie safety Caleb Downs has outlined ambitious goals for the team’s defense heading into the 2026 season.
Downs, selected 11th overall in the draft, emphasized a high standard when speaking with The Athletic’s Jon Machota.
“To be dominant,” Downs said. “That’s what I’ve thought about with every defense I’ve been on. And we have the talent to do it, to dominate every offense that we go against.”
The remarks come after a challenging previous year in which the Cowboys defense finished near the bottom of the NFL, surrendering 30.1 points per game and ranking 30th in total yards allowed.
Any progress would mark a step forward, yet Downs envisions far more than modest gains. His confidence draws from strong showings at Ohio State, where the 2025 Buckeyes limited opponents to 9.3 points per game and the prior year’s squad allowed 12.9.
In 2025, Downs recorded 68 tackles, one sack, two interceptions, two pass deflections and two forced fumbles. The season before that, he posted 82 tackles, a half-sack, six pass deflections and two interceptions.
A two-time All-American and former Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, Downs brings leadership, high football intelligence and versatility in both coverage and run support that the Cowboys hope will spark a turnaround.
Meanwhile, fellow newcomer linebacker Jaishawn Barham has drawn positive reviews during training camp. Barham, a third-round selection in April, is competing for significant snaps at the linebacker position.
“Barham was taken in the third round back in April, and he’s battling for early playing time at the linebacker spot,” SB Nation’s Matthew Lenix wrote. “Learning curves are expected in these situations, but Barham is looking like a seasoned pro in a short amount of time. Whether it’s been against the run or the pass, Barham’s instincts and processing ability have been on full display.”
“At Michigan, Barham played both linebacker and edge. He’ll be asked to do some of both in Dallas as well,” Lenix added. “That type of versatility makes him a great fit for what Christian Parker wants to do, and if he keeps that up when the pads come on, veteran Dee Winters will have some serious competition at middle linebacker.”
The influx of talent has not gone unnoticed by quarterback Dak Prescott.
Prescott guided an offense that averaged 27.7 points per game last season, often needing to outscore opponents because of defensive shortcomings. He has already detected meaningful changes during camp practices.
“A defense that is communicating,” Prescott said. “A defense that takes a lot of pride in what they do in each and every one of their calls, taking pride in playing with one another.”
Those observations suggest the unit could provide stronger support this year.
With Downs projecting dominance and Barham showing early promise, the Dallas Cowboys defense is aiming to reverse last season’s struggles and help elevate the overall team performance.
