As the MLB trade deadline draws near, the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels completed an unexpected deal on Wednesday night that sent catcher Logan O’Hoppe and right-handed pitcher Chase Silseth to Texas in exchange for minor league infielder Angel Arredondo.
The move, first reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan, comes as both clubs navigate the final stretch before the deadline and reflects different priorities for each organization. And given that both squads are AL West rivals, it was definitely a rare move.
O’Hoppe arrives in Texas after a difficult 2026 season with the Angels, where he managed just four home runs and 23 RBIs in 79 games. Once regarded as a rising talent, the 26-year-old has struggled to maintain consistency at the plate this year.
The Rangers have already decided to option him to Triple-A, giving him a chance to regain his form away from the major league spotlight before potentially returning later in the season. Behind the plate, Elias Diaz will continue to handle the majority of the catching responsibilities, with Austin Wynns remaining available as the backup.
Before joining the Angels, O’Hoppe was once a top prospect in the Philadelphia Phillies organization. Selected by the Phillies in the 23rd round of the 2018 draft out of high school, he steadily climbed their farm system and earned recognition as one of the club’s better young talents.
His progress eventually led to a trade to the Angels in 2022 in exchange for outfielder Brandon Marsh, a move that opened a clearer path for him to the majors. That background as a former highly regarded prospect adds an interesting layer to his arrival in Texas, where the organization will hope he can rediscover the skills that once made him a standout in the minors.
On the pitching side, Silseth may prove to be the more immediately useful piece for the Rangers. The 26-year-old right-hander has worked primarily out of the bullpen this season and posted a 2.72 ERA across 47 appearances with the Angels. Texas has been searching for additional relief help, and Silseth’s solid numbers this year suggest he could contribute right away in a high-leverage or middle-relief role.
The player headed the other way, Angel Arredondo, remains a developing prospect still early in his professional career. The Mexico native, born in 2006, has spent the season with the Rangers’ Single-A affiliate. In 300 at-bats, he has hit .247 with eight home runs, 47 RBIs, three stolen bases, and a .769 OPS. Over his minor league career to this point, he owns a .244 average with nine home runs and 74 RBIs in 524 at-bats. The Angels will look to continue his development within their own system.
For the Rangers, the deal signals an intent to improve the roster ahead of the deadline rather than stand pat. After a loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday, Texas sat at 55-53 and held a slim lead in the American League West, sitting 1.5 games ahead of the Houston Astros and two games clear of the Seattle Mariners.
Adding depth at catcher and in the bullpen gives the club more flexibility as it tries to maintain its position in a competitive division race during the second half of the season.
Whether the Rangers make additional moves before the deadline remains to be seen, but this transaction shows they are willing to act when opportunities arise.
For O’Hoppe, the change of scenery and time in Triple-A could provide the reset needed to return to the form that once made him a highly regarded prospect. Silseth, meanwhile, steps into a situation where his recent effectiveness may be put to use sooner rather than later. The Angels, for their part, receive a young infielder with room to grow as they continue reshaping their roster.
