Zavier Scott entered the Minnesota Vikings’ 2026 offseason hoping to solidify his place as a reliable change-of-pace option in the backfield. Instead, the veteran running back finds himself locked in one of the more precarious battles of training camp, fighting simply to remain on the 53-man roster.

The unexpected decision by Aaron Jones to restructure his contract and return for another season immediately narrowed the path for Scott. Jones remains the clear lead back, while Jordan Mason continues to build momentum as the primary complement.
That leaves Scott, who managed just 114 yards on 32 carries a year ago, competing for the third-string role against a player the organization deliberately drafted to challenge him.
Sixth-round selection Demond Claiborne arrived from Wake Forest with a reputation for elusiveness and efficiency. At 5-foot-10 and 195 pounds, the rookie is smaller than Scott, yet his 5.1 yards-per-carry average last season and a strong showing during rookie minicamp have already turned heads.
Coaches appear intrigued by the possibility that Claiborne can deliver the exact kind of quick-strike production Scott has yet to consistently provide.
For Scott, the challenge is clear. He must demonstrate that his experience, pass-protection reliability, and familiarity with the offense outweigh the upside of a cheaper, younger alternative.
