The Denver Nuggets are once again positioning themselves as serious contenders for LeBron James as the veteran superstar prepares for a major career decision.

Reports indicate that the organization has directly reached out to the 21-time All-NBA selection to gauge his interest in joining the squad. This move comes as the Nuggets seek to rebuild momentum around Nikola Jokic, their three-time MVP center, especially after suffering an early postseason departure that fell short of their usual standards.

According to the Denver Post, Denver made contact with James shortly after news broke about his plans to depart the Los Angeles Lakers in free agency. This development marks the conclusion of an eight-year chapter with the Lakers, during which he helped secure the 2020 championship.

Several other competitive franchises have also entered the mix for James’s services. Teams such as the Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, and Minnesota Timberwolves are reportedly showing strong interest in the future Hall of Famer.

Denver’s current courtship echoes past efforts to bring the superstar aboard. Back in 2018, when James first became available in free agency, the franchise made a notable attempt to recruit him.

Team president Josh Kroenke has long held a positive personal relationship with James. Kroenke has previously described James as “a very dear friend,” and the organization once again finds itself trying to persuade one of the NBA’s all-time greats to suit up in a Nuggets uniform.

The context surrounding this latest pursuit differs significantly from previous attempts. Instead of inviting James to a team in transition, Denver now presents a chance to team up with Jokic, who is considered by many to be the top player currently active and the driving force behind a consistent title-contending roster.

Recent developments have added urgency to the Nuggets’ strategy. Indications suggest that Jokic may once more postpone discussions on a contract extension until the following summer, prompting the front office to explore high-impact additions that could solidify the core.

ESPN’s Brian Windhorst has highlighted Denver as a potential surprise landing spot for James in recent commentary. Speaking on The Hoop Collective podcast ahead of free agency, Windhorst described the Nuggets as an “outlier team” capable of attracting James if he prioritized basketball fit over other factors.

“I have long believed that if there was an outlier team for LeBron James, if he was willing to take sort of some exception, it was Denver,” Windhorst said.

The potential partnership draws strength from the mutual respect between James and Jokic. James has repeatedly praised the Serbian superstar, calling him “one of the greatest players to ever play this game.”

This renewed interest arrives following a campaign that underwhelmed relative to expectations for the Nuggets. Even with another standout MVP-level performance from Jokic, the team bowed out in the opening playoff round, revealing gaps in supporting talent and overall roster strength around their central figure.

Bringing James into the fold would reshape Denver’s outlook almost instantly. At age 42, the forward continues to excel as a top-tier facilitator, offering another high-IQ presence who could share the creative burden with Jokic and create one of the most intelligent offensive pairings across the league.

Such a union would elevate the Nuggets into an even more imposing force among the NBA’s elite. It represents a strategic opportunity to blend generational experience with established excellence, potentially addressing the shortcomings exposed in their latest postseason run while chasing another championship banner.
