The Golden State Warriors face a tougher road than before in landing a transformative superstar like Giannis Antetokounmpo, yet the franchise retains several avenues to reshape its title contention outlook for the better. With roster flexibility and a competitive core still in place, the team continues exploring high-impact additions that could elevate their standing in the Western Conference.

Recent discussions have kept Kawhi Leonard squarely in the conversation as a potential target.

ESPN insider Anthony Slater highlighted the Warriors as a sensible destination for the veteran forward, building on longstanding speculation that has connected Leonard to Golden State over recent months.

Despite the ongoing interest, securing a deal for Leonard presents substantial hurdles. The Clippers have shown only limited willingness to entertain offers, and any path forward would require overcoming significant internal resistance from Los Angeles ownership.

“The Warriors checked in on Leonard in the days leading up to the February trade deadline,” Slater wrote. “The LA Clippers, team sources said, engaged to a greater degree than in the past, but they ultimately returned to the Warriors with the same answer: Team owner Steve Ballmer said no.”

“Leonard, unlike (LeBron) James, would cost a mix of players and future draft capital and would presumably require a large-scale extension off his current $50.3 million expiring deal, making it a greater long-term gamble.”

“But team sources continue to indicate he’s the type of established wing talent they would pursue in a win-now maneuver, depending on the price point. The problem: League sources said Ballmer has maintained a firm stance against a Leonard trade, preferring to continue building around his star forward.”

At 34 years old, Leonard carried high expectations into the 2025-26 season as he sought to silence questions about his durability and overall value. In the prior campaign, he posted solid numbers of 21.5 points per game alongside 1.6 steals, though recurring knee problems and other lower-body ailments forced him to sit out 45 games, limiting his availability and raising concerns about his long-term reliability.

This season told a much more encouraging story. Leonard managed to appear in 65 contests, delivering a career-high 27.9 points per game on elite efficiency, including 50.5 percent shooting from the field and 38.7 percent from beyond the arc. Those outputs reaffirmed his status as a premier two-way contributor when healthy and fueled optimism in Los Angeles.

The strong showing has understandably shifted the Clippers’ perspective. Rather than parting ways with their veteran leader, the organization now appears far more inclined to construct the roster around Leonard’s proven abilities, especially given his resurgence as a two-time NBA Finals MVP and seven-time All-Star.

For the Warriors, this development does not entirely close the door but does complicate their ambitions. Golden State may still extend an aggressive offer centered on win-now pieces and assets, yet overcoming Steve Ballmer’s clear preference to retain Leonard will demand creativity and perhaps more than the market is currently willing to yield.

Ultimately, the pursuit reflects the Warriors’ determination to bolster their championship window while it remains open.

Whether Leonard becomes available or stays put in Los Angeles, the coming months will test Golden State’s front-office resourcefulness as they chase the upgrades needed to climb back among the NBA’s elite.
