The New York Yankees closed Friday with a 1-0 win over the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. Far from the Bronx, their Triple-A club made a quieter lineup choice that still drew notice from fans watching both games.
The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders beat the Worcester Red Sox 2-0. Anthony Volpe led off and started at shortstop.
That assignment stood out. Volpe had spent most of his time at second base since the Yankees optioned him to Triple-A earlier this month.
He finished 1-for-4 with an RBI.
The RailRiders needed only two runs. Volpe’s night was modest on the stat sheet, but the position itself became the story.
Yankees officials have not issued a public explanation for putting him back at shortstop for that game. The move still registered with supporters who have followed his work in the minors.
Social media filled quickly with reactions after the final out.
The contrast between the two Friday games was hard to miss. In the Bronx, the Yankees scraped out a shutout. In Pennsylvania, their top affiliate also won by two runs and put Volpe at a familiar spot he had not been occupying as often.
Shortstop is where Volpe made his name in the majors. Second base has been the more common landing place since the demotion. Seeing him lead off at short again raised questions about how the organization wants him used if he returns in September.
Roster expansion is approaching. That calendar fact sat under much of the online conversation, even when posters did not say it outright.
Volpe’s one hit and one RBI will not rewrite a season by themselves. The lineup card might matter more than the box score for people tracking his path back.
The RailRiders still have games left. The Yankees still have a pennant race. Friday simply put Volpe at shortstop again, and people noticed.
Whether that look lasts beyond one night remains a matter for the front office. For now, the decision was quiet, the result was a win, and the quotes from fans were already on the record.
