In the emotionally charged atmosphere of a Texas courtroom, Hunter Metcalf stood before the man convicted of killing his twin brother, delivering a powerful victim impact statement that captured the profound grief and anger felt by the entire family. Karmelo Anthony, who had just received a 35-year prison sentence for the first-degree murder of high school athlete Austin Metcalf, faced the twin directly as Hunter demanded accountability during the hearing.

Hunter Metcalf made it clear he wanted full eye contact while sharing his pain, refusing to let the moment pass without forcing the convicted killer to confront the human cost of his actions. Family members, including Austin’s parents and other relatives, also took the stand to express their enduring loss in a case that had drawn widespread attention from the start.

Anthony appeared overcome with emotion, sobbing throughout much of the verdict and sentencing proceedings while often keeping his head lowered as the Metcalf family addressed him one by one. The tragedy unfolded on April 2, 2025, at a track and field meet in Frisco, where the 19-year-old Anthony stabbed the 17-year-old Austin during a dispute, a claim of self-defense that the jury ultimately rejected.

Months earlier, in a poignant high school graduation ceremony, Hunter had stepped forward not only to accept his own diploma but also to receive the one that would have belonged to his brother. The moment earned a standing ovation from those in attendance, and the school included a special tribute honoring Austin’s memory, highlighting the deep void left in the lives of his classmates and loved ones.

Turning his attention squarely to Anthony in court, Hunter did not hold back in describing the irreplaceable role his twin had played.

“You took a son, a brother, a friend, my best friend from this world,” he said. “You took someone away from me who was supposed to be an uncle to my kids… Now I want everything taken from you.”

He continued to paint a vivid picture of daily life altered forever by the loss.

“You still have air while my brother is six feet under,” Hunter said. “I wake up every morning and his door is still shut.”

Austin’s mother, Megan Metcalf, also shared her shattered reality with the court, emphasizing how ordinary joys had been replaced by absence.

“Now I only have videos and memories of his laugh,” she told Anthony. “You may have been given a sentence of 35 years. You should feel lucky. I’ve been sentenced to a lifetime without my son.”

Jeff Metcalf, Austin’s father, spoke of the instant bond formed at his son’s birth and the broader message he hoped would emerge from the tragedy.

“Since the day he first grabbed my finger, he had my heart with it,” he said.

He went on to address ongoing harassment the family had endured and stressed unity beyond division.

“I said from Day 1 this was never about race. It’s about right and wrong. We are all humans. We all bleed the same color. You will face those consequences starting today.”

The case stirred significant public debate, particularly after a crowdfunding effort for Anthony’s defense raised more than $600,000. Donations continued to pour in even following his conviction, adding another layer of controversy to an already heartbreaking story that touched on issues of youth violence and justice.

As the Metcalf family continues to navigate their grief, Hunter’s words in the courtroom serve as a testament to the unbreakable bond between twins and the lasting impact one life can have on so many others.

The sentencing brings a measure of legal resolution, yet for those who knew and loved Austin, the personal sentences of loss will endure far beyond any term of years.
