Rory McIlroy wrapped up his appearance at the Memorial Tournament with mixed feelings, particularly regarding his performance off the tee.

Despite flashes of strong play throughout the week, the Northern Irish star struggled with accuracy from the driver, finding just 30 out of 56 fairways. This inconsistency prompted him to openly express his irritation with that aspect of his game as he prepares for the next big test on the calendar.

McIlroy’s ball-striking issues with the driver stood out as the main area of concern amid an otherwise competitive showing. The tournament at Muirfield Village highlighted ongoing challenges in his driving accuracy, even as other elements of his game showed promise. With a major championship looming, these concerns take on added significance for the four-time major winner.

Reflecting on his round, McIlroy described his recent form in measured terms.

“It was sort of like two steps forward, one step back,” McIlroy said. “Off the tee still wasn’t where I want it to be. I feel limited at the minute. Thankfully the fairways at Shinnecock are a little wider than they are here.”

He acknowledged that his driving woes have left him feeling somewhat restricted on the course. However, McIlroy took encouragement from the layout awaiting him at the upcoming U.S. Open, noting the more forgiving fairways could play to his advantage as he fine-tunes his setup.

Beyond the driver, McIlroy found positives in several other departments of his game. His iron play delivered solid results, and his wedge work around the greens proved reliable. Putting also held up well for much of the event, offering a foundation he can build upon in the days ahead.

“I need to work on how I’m hitting it off the tee. But everything else, [my] putting felt pretty good for the most part and my iron play and wedges were pretty nice. I’ll just try to keep getting a little bit better each and every day heading into Shinnecock,” he added.

With the U.S. Open set to begin on June 18 at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, McIlroy’s comments arrive at a critical juncture. Just over a week remains for him to address the technical elements causing his driving struggles before facing one of golf’s toughest tests. His self-awareness about the problem offers a pathway toward improvement.

McIlroy provided a detailed breakdown of the swing flaw contributing to his difficulties.

“I get a little bit underneath the plane on the way down and then from there I try to drag the handle to match it up, and then I get toe strikes, and then the toe strikes are — like, so if I’m aiming a touch left trying to hit a cut and I get a touch underneath it and then I try to save it by dragging the handle, I hit it off the toe and then it goes left,” he said.

The fact that McIlroy can articulate the root cause of his driver issues represents encouraging news. This level of insight suggests he possesses the tools necessary to make targeted adjustments rather than guessing at broader problems.

On a brighter note, McIlroy heads toward Shinnecock with considerable momentum from his recent achievements. He captured the Masters for the second consecutive year, underlining his status among the game’s elite.

Additionally, he stands out as one of only three players who managed top-10 finishes in both the Masters and the PGA Championship, where he tied for seventh place. These accomplishments reinforce his credentials as he chases further major success this season.
