As the Florida Gators football team navigates a challenging transition, the search for a permanent head coach intensifies after the mid-season ouster of Billy Napier earlier this year.

The Gators, a powerhouse with deep-rooted traditions, boast a legacy shaped by legendary figures like the College Football Hall of Famer Steve Spurrier.

During his 12-year tenure from 1990 to 2001, Spurrier transformed the program, compiling an impressive 122-27 record and delivering the team’s inaugural national title in 1996. At 80 years old, the retired coaching icon recently shared his perspective on potential successors during an appearance on the “Another Dooley Noted” podcast.

Spurrier highlighted two standout options he views as exceptional choices for the role.

“I know Lane Kiffin and I know Eli Drinkwitz,” Spurrier said.

“Obviously, either one of those guys would be super if it works out. But, it’s a long way from whoever we’re going to get as our coach right now.”

Lane Kiffin, currently steering Ole Miss, and Eli Drinkwitz, at the helm of Missouri, have faced a barrage of inquiries regarding their long-term plans amid their squads’ push toward the end of the 2025 campaign.

In the interim, the Gators are under the guidance of Billy Gonzales, who will guide the team into their upcoming clash with the ranked No. 20 Tennessee Volunteers this Saturday. With high stakes on the horizon, Florida’s athletic department remains focused on securing a leader capable of reigniting the program’s storied success.

It will be interesting to see who the Gators end up hiring when all is said and done. Florida is still one of the top jobs in college football.

Fans would love to see one of Spurrier’s top options end up getting the job. For now, all that Gators fans can do is to wait and see what ends up happening.
