Bengals’ Ja’Marr Chase Could Be Bracing for NFL Punishment

The Cincinnati Bengals’ slim chances of reaching the postseason took a significant hit following a lopsided 34-12 defeat at the hands of the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. Now sitting at 3-7, the team finds itself firmly entrenched at the bottom of the AFC North standings, and the fallout from the loss extends beyond the scoreboard.

A heated on-field altercation occurred between Bengals wideout Ja’Marr Chase and Pittsburgh Steelers safety Jalen Ramsey.

The incident, occurring late in the contest, has sparked a potential NFL investigation that could sideline Chase due to a suspension.

As the clock wound down in the fourth quarter, tensions boiled over when Ramsey struck Chase on the helmet, resulting in Ramsey’s immediate ejection from the game. In the aftermath, Ramsey claimed that Chase had spat on him, an accusation that directly precipitated the physical confrontation and subsequent removal.

Post-game scrutiny intensified when Austin Briski, a reporter for Fox19, posted on X (formerly Twitter) a compelling clip that appeared to capture the moment in question. The footage clearly shows Chase spitting toward Ramsey just prior to the retaliatory blow. Should this evidence withstand league examination and confirm the act of spitting, the Bengals’ dynamic pass-catcher faces the real prospect of a one-game ban.

NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo elaborated on the potential repercussions, drawing parallels to a prior high-profile case to underscore the league’s firm stance.

“So, going back to the Jalen Carter situation,” Garafolo wrote, “the NFL has made it clear spitting on an opponent is now on the level of a suspension. Carter served his Week 1 because he was ejected before the first snap. Today’s was deep into the fourth quarter.”

To contextualize Garafolo’s insight, it’s worth revisiting the Jalen Carter episode from the league’s 2024 kickoff. The Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman was involved in a pre-snap scuffle on opening night, during which he directed spit at Dallas Cowboys signal-caller Dak Prescott. Officials tossed Carter from the game before it even began, but the NFL later ruled that the ejection effectively fulfilled any penalty, sparing him an additional absence.

In stark contrast, Chase’s alleged misconduct unfolded well into the Bengals-Steelers affair, minimizing any immediate in-game consequence. Garafolo’s analysis suggests that this timing could work against Chase: even a hypothetical ejection at that stage wouldn’t equate to a full “served” suspension in the eyes of the commissioner’s office.

With no on-field discipline meted out during the match – Chase continued participating until the final whistle – the video evidence shared by Briski provides the NFL with ample grounds to impose a fresh one-week penalty.

This brewing potential suspension would arrive at the worst possible moment for Cincinnati, as they prepare to host the New England Patriots in Week 12. Already grappling with injuries and inconsistency, the Bengals can ill afford to lose their premier offensive weapon, who has been a bright spot amid the team’s struggles.

Chase’s absence could further erode their fragile momentum, making an already uphill climb toward a wild-card berth feel insurmountable.

As the NFL’s disciplinary arm pores over the footage and statements in the coming days, Bengals fans are left bracing for more bad news. What began as a forgettable loss now threatens to cast a long shadow, testing the resolve of a squad desperate for any semblance of hope in a disappointing campaign.

Updates on the investigation are expected soon, but for now, the incident has the potential to alter Cincinnati’s trajectory dramatically.
