Browns Make Intentions Clear About Shedeur Sanders

The Cleveland Browns’ decision to list rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders as questionable on the injury report ahead of their Week 8 clash with the New England Patriots ignited a firestorm of trade speculation across social media. Fans and analysts quickly spun theories about the Colorado product’s future, especially with veteran Deshaun Watson reportedly nearing a return from his Achilles injury.

In recent days, Sanders has emerged as a hot name in NFL trade chatter. Some scenarios tied him to the New York Jets in a blockbuster swap involving star wideout Garrett Wilson.

NFL insiders and team sources repeatedly flagged the Browns as a potential mover in big-picture deals, fueling the frenzy.

But on Saturday, Browns beat reporter Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com poured cold water on the rumors, confirming Sanders remains firmly off the market.

“Social media speculation ran rampant on Saturday when the Browns added Sanders to the injury report as questionable for the Patriots game with back tightness,” Cabot wrote. “But the soreness is legitimate, and the Browns have no plans to trade Sanders, even though he’s not getting any first-team reps in practice, and might not see the field for a while.”

Prior to the injury, Sanders served as Cleveland’s No. 2 quarterback behind fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel. On Sunday, however, he was deactivated due to the back issue. In his absence, the team elevated third-stringer Bailey Zappe from the practice squad, promoting him to backup duties for the game.

Once Sanders recovers, he’s slated to reclaim the QB2 spot, with Zappe likely returning to the practice squad.

Gabriel, the 24-year-old Oregon product, stepped into the starting role after Cleveland shipped veteran Joe Flacco to the division-rival Cincinnati Bengals.

His performance has been steady but unspectacular: 546 passing yards, three touchdowns, zero interceptions, and an 82.5 passer rating across three starts. The Browns sit at 1-2 in those contests.

As the team prepares for Sunday’s matchup against a struggling Patriots squad, eyes will be on Gabriel to build momentum. Should he falter again, whispers suggest the Browns might leverage their upcoming bye week to reassess the quarterback room—though any drastic changes appear unlikely with Sanders’ status clarified and Watson’s recovery on the horizon.

For now, Cleveland remains committed to developing its young signal-callers, quashing the trade noise and focusing on the task at hand in Foxborough.
