The Minnesota Vikings will head into training camp without naming a starting quarterback, and new reports suggest the competition between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy could drag on until just before the regular season kicks off.
NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport said the quarterback battle will be one of the biggest stories of the summer. It is expected to play out through practices, preseason games and right up to the season opener.
“For the Minnesota Vikings, no doubt one of the biggest storylines of all training camp, they have their quarterback battle as well,” Rapoport said. “Is it Kyler Murray? Is it J.J. McCarthy? That is going to be going on throughout camp, through the preseason games, right up to the start of the season.”
The approach marks a patient stance from coach Kevin O’Connell. Many people around the league figured Murray would win the job quickly after signing with the team on a veteran minimum deal this offseason.
