49ers, Giants Linked to Major Trade for Defensive Star

The San Francisco 49ers saw a mass exodus of players depart this offseason, as their salary cap situation just became too much to bear. Could they turn to the New York Giants to help soften the blow?

The 49ers don’t necessarily have to build from the ground up, but they definitely have some big holes to fill, and that includes their pass rush after releasing edge rusher Leonard Floyd.

Well, Mike Luciano of GMEN HQ has identified a potential trade acquisition for San Francisco, naming New York Giants star Kayvon Thibodeaux as a possible target.

“Thibodeaux is Los Angeles born-and-bred, so this mini-homecoming that sends him back to California could be ideal for him both personally and professionally,” Luciano wrote. “Thibodeaux would be guaranteed a starting role opposite Nick Bosa, and the 49ers could add a star edge rusher while still focusing their early 2025 picks on the offensive line and secondary.”

A duo of Bosa and Thibodeaux would certainly be terrifying, and the best part is that Thibodeaux only carries a $10 million cap hit for 2025. He also has another year of club control remaining on his contract with a team option for 2026.

Why would the Giants trade the 24-year-old then? Well, New York may select Abdul Carter with the No. 3 overall pick of the NFL Draft, which would create quite the logjam for the Giants at edge rusher. While that’s a cushy problem to have, Big Blue may want to allocate some of those resources elsewhere on the roster.

New York acquired Brian Burns in a sign-and-trade with the Carolina Panthers last offseason, giving the Giants one of the better pass-rushing tandems in football. But if the G-Men do plan on drafting Carter, it would definitely make sense for them to entertain a trade for Thibodeaux.

It would definitely behoove the 49ers to start getting younger, and Thibodeaux fits the bill there. He also rattled off 50 tackles and 11.5 sacks in 2023 before missing five games due to a wrist injury this past year, when he finished with 28 tackles and 5.5 sacks.
