The Detroit Pistons have officially secured a playoff berth, marking a significant turnaround just one year after enduring the worst season in franchise history. Their 117-105 victory against the Toronto Raptors on Friday not only confirmed their postseason entry but also signaled a new era of optimism for the team.

Jalen Duren, the Pistons’ center, was vocal about the team’s resilience in the face of widespread skepticism.

“People doubted us. They didn’t believe. They thought it would take longer for us to turn this thing around, but we’re here,” Duren said after the game. “We’re not done yet. We’re going to take a moment to enjoy what we’ve accomplished, but it’s only milestones. The real goal, obviously, is to bring championships back to our city.”

The Pistons had secured at least a play-in spot but have been eyeing a top-six seed in the Eastern Conference for weeks. With a record of 43-34, Detroit currently holds the fifth position, narrowly ahead of the Milwaukee Bucks.

While they still have a shot at the No. 4 spot, overtaking the Indiana Pacers, who lead them by three games with five to play, will require a strong finish to the season.

Head coach J.B. Bickerstaff has been credited with playing a pivotal role in the team’s resurgence. The Pistons finished last season with a 14-68 record, tied for the 12th worst in NBA history by winning percentage (.171). This season, they exceeded their 2023-24 win total by January 1 and matched their combined win total from the previous two seasons by February 23.

Cade Cunningham, the No. 1 overall pick four years ago, has blossomed into the franchise player Detroit hoped for, averaging career-highs in points (25.7 per game), assists (9.2), and rebounds (6.1) while achieving the highest field-goal percentage (46.2) of his career in 66 starts this season.

Duren, who is tied for ninth in the NBA with 39 double-doubles, showcased his prowess with a 21-point, 18-rebound performance in the playoff-clinching victory.

The foundation appears set for the Pistons to build a successful roster moving forward. This season’s playoff berth marks a substantial progress point for the franchise, entering the postseason for the first time since the 2018-19 season, and reignites hope among fans and players alike for the future of basketball in Detroit.
