The Philadelphia Eagles lost a couple of star defensive players this offseason, as defensive tackle Milton Williams and edge rusher Josh Sweat both departed via free agency.
While the Eagles signed Azeez Ojulari and Josh Uche to help offset the loss of Sweat, they still have yet to replace Williams, who represented a significant part of their top-ranked defense in 2024.
Philadelphia can certainly try to find his replacement via the NFL Draft, and we know how well the Eagles tend to do in the draft. However, Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox also feels that Philly may want to try prying defensive lineman John Franklin-Meyers away from the Denver Broncos.
“The Eagles might be able to convince the Denver Broncos to part with the 28-year-old,” Knox wrote. “Franklin-Myers is entering a contract year and just watched the Broncos give D.J. Jones a three-year, $39 million extension. Pro Bowl pass-rusher Nik Bonitto is also due an extension, and Franklin-Myers has made it known that he’d prefer a new deal too.”
Franklin-Meyers enjoyed a terrific season this past year, racking up 40 tackles and seven sacks for the Broncos. He had spent the previous four campaigns with the New York Jets, where he was more than serviceable and displayed great versatility.
The Stephen F. Austin product would also fit into the Eagles’ budget.
“The Eagles have $13.6 million in cap space and also tend to structure deals with low base salaries, so financially, acquiring and extending Franklin-Myers would be perfectly reasonable,” Knox added.
Believe it or not, Philadelphia wasn’t great at getting to opposing quarterbacks this past season, finishing with 41 sacks. However, the Eagles obviously made Patrick Mahomes’ life miserable in the Super Bowl.
The problem is that Williams played a chief role in that, logging a couple of sacks in Philadelphia’s victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.
Bringing in Franklin-Meyers—who was arguably better than Williams during the 2024 regular season—would represent a great pivot for the Birds.
