The Chicago Cubs walked into Wednesday’s series finale against the Milwaukee Brewers still absorbing a painful extra-inning collapse the night before.
What had looked like a hard-earned road win evaporated in the bottom of the ninth, when Milwaukee scored three unanswered runs after Chicago had finally broken a 1-1 deadlock. The defeat left the Cubs needing both a bounce-back performance and a small tactical adjustment in the batting order.
Tuesday’s game had been defined by pitching. Jacob Misiorowski kept the Cubs off the scoreboard for most of the evening, and Chicago’s own staff matched him until the late innings.
The visitors finally pushed two runs across in the top of the ninth against Milwaukee’s bullpen, only to watch the lead disappear in the bottom half. The sequence was the kind of loss that can linger if a club lets it, especially in a tight divisional race.
Manager Craig Counsell’s response was immediate and visible in the lineup card posted before Wednesday’s first pitch.
Alex Bregman, who had occupied the third spot for the first two games of the series, was moved into the cleanup hole, via Underdog MLB.
Pete Crow-Armstrong remained in center and at the top of the order, followed by Seiya Suzuki and Michael Busch. Bregman then slotted in at third base and fourth in the lineup, with Ian Happ serving as designated hitter, Nico Hoerner at shortstop, Pablo Ramírez at second, Michael Conforto in left, and Carson Kelly behind the plate. Kevin Gausman drew the start opposite Milwaukee’s Logan Henderson.
The shift is modest on paper but carries a clear intent. Bregman has been one of the more consistent bats in the middle of Chicago’s order since joining the club, and placing him behind Busch and Suzuki gives those hitters extra protection while also putting Bregman in position to drive in runs if the first three reach base.
After two nights of seeing him third, Counsell appears to be searching for a slightly different rhythm against a Brewers staff that has been difficult to solve.
Gausman will need to be sharper than the Cubs’ late-inning relievers were Tuesday. Milwaukee has shown it can manufacture runs in a hurry once the game reaches the late frames, and American Family Field has not been a friendly venue for Chicago this series.
A clean start from Gausman and timely hitting from the newly arranged middle of the order would go a long way toward erasing the memory of the previous night’s collapse.
The Cubs still control their own path in the standings, but nights like Tuesday illustrate how quickly a two-run lead can disappear. Wednesday’s lineup change is a small acknowledgment of that reality: keep the same personnel, rearrange the sequence, and try to extract a different result from a similar group of hitters.
Whether the move produces extra runs remains to be seen, but it at least signals that the club is not content to simply replay the same card after a deflating loss.
