San Antonio Spurs star guard De’Aaron Fox is set to undergo season-ending surgery on Tuesday to repair tendon damage in his left pinkie.

The injury Fox sustained during training camp with the Sacramento Kings in October has plagued him throughout the season, prompting the decision for surgery to ensure a full recovery.

Fox, who was traded to the Spurs at the NBA trade deadline, appeared in 17 games for San Antonio and delivered standout performances, including a 32-point, 11-assist outing in a victory over the Dallas Mavericks last Wednesday.

Throughout the season, spanning both teams, Fox averaged 23.5 points, 6.3 assists, and 4.8 rebounds across 62 games.

The decision to proceed with surgery allows Fox to focus on rehabilitation and building chemistry with the Spurs roster during the offseason. His impressive season included a career highlight, scoring 60 points against the Minnesota Timberwolves on November 15, setting a franchise record for the Kings and marking the highest single-game point total in the NBA this season.

Fox’s surgery adds to a challenging season for the Spurs, who are already without star center Victor Wembanyama and head coach Gregg Popovich.

Wembanyama was sidelined in February with deep vein thrombosis, and Popovich has been absent since November due to a mild stroke.

The Spurs currently hold a 27-37 record. For the remainder of the season, they will face a rebuilding process without key figures like Wembanyama and Fox.
