Washington Wizards forward Bilal Coulibaly’s season may be over after he sustained a right hamstring injury during this week’s game against the Toronto Raptors.

The Wizards announced that Coulibaly, initially diagnosed with a hip contusion, is expected to miss four to six weeks following an MRI. This puts his return this season in doubt, as the team’s final game is just four-and-a-half weeks away.

NBA News: Washington Wizards to Take Conservative Approach

Josh Robbins of The Athletic reported that the team opts for a conservative treatment approach. This suggests that despite not being formally ruled out, Coulibaly has likely played his last game of the 2024-25 NBA season.

This development is particularly disheartening for the young player, who had been showing considerable progress in his second year in the league.

Before the injury, the 20-year-old Frenchman averaged 12.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.4 assists over 59 games, solidifying his role as a starter and averaging 33.0 minutes per game. His shooting percentages stood at 42.1% from the field, 28.1% from beyond the arc, and 74.6% from the free-throw line.

NBA News: Bilal Coulibaly Holds Significant Potential

Coulibaly’s potential has been evident since he was drafted seventh overall in the 2023 NBA Draft after playing alongside Victor Wembanyama in France. However, his career has been marred by injuries early on, with a right wrist fracture cutting his rookie season short.

Despite these setbacks, he was named to the Rising Stars event at All-Star weekend this season, indicating his recognized talent and potential.

The Wizards, struggling with a league-worst 13-51 record, will feel Coulibaly’s absence as they navigate a challenging season. The team’s focus will likely shift towards developing other young talent and preparing for the upcoming draft, where they could secure a high pick to complement Coulibaly and the rest of the young core in future seasons.

As Washington looks ahead, the organization remains hopeful for Coulibaly’s full recovery and continued development into the franchise’s cornerstone player.
