While the team already boasted a breakout star in Christian Gonzalez, they knew one elite corner wasn’t enough to compete at the highest level.
Enter Carlton Davis, a seasoned veteran whose signing on Day 1 of free agency signals the Patriots’ intent to fortify their secondary and take a significant step forward in 2025.
Gonzalez, a rising star, turned heads in the 2024 season with an impressive stat line: 59 total tackles, two interceptions, one fumble recovery, and 11 pass breakups. Tasked with shadowing No. 1 wide receivers week after week, he excelled, earning a well-deserved spot on the AP All-Pro second team.
His length, range, and ball skills made him a cornerstone of New England’s defense, but the modern NFL demands depth and versatility at the position. The Patriots needed a complementary piece—someone who could lock down the opposite side of the field and elevate the unit as a whole.
That search led them to Davis, who inked a three-year, $60 million contract ($34.5 million guaranteed) with the Patriots earlier this week. The 28-year-old brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record to Foxborough.
Davis spent his first six seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, playing a pivotal role in their Super Bowl LV victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020. More recently, after a midseason trade to the Detroit Lions in 2024, he continued to shine, posting 56 total tackles, two interceptions, two fumble recoveries, and 11 pass breakups in just 13 games.
At his introductory press conference on Thursday, Davis didn’t hold back his enthusiasm about joining forces with Gonzalez.
“I’m excited, man. I’m excited,” Davis said. “He’s a young, great player. I’ve watched his film. Even when he was coming out of college, I watched his film. I always kind of do a little background check on the corners coming into the league. I guess it’s a competitive thing. But I liked his film. He’s long, he’s rangy, got good ball skills. He had a really good year last year, in my opinion.”
The mutual respect between the two cornerbacks could set the stage for a dynamic partnership in the New England Patriots’ secondary.
Davis’s arrival also marks a reunion with Terrell Williams, who joined the Patriots as defensive coordinator in January after coaching the Lions’ defensive line in 2024. That familiarity should ease Davis’s transition and allow him to hit the ground running as the team prepares for the upcoming season.
While the Patriots’ secondary looks increasingly formidable with Gonzalez and Davis atop the depth chart, the team still has work to do elsewhere. Positions like left tackle and wide receiver remain glaring needs that must be addressed to round out the roster.
However, securing a veteran of Davis’s caliber alongside a young talent like Gonzalez gives New England a strong foundation at one of football’s most critical positions.
