The New York Knicks are set to begin the 2024-25 season without their starting center, Mitchell Robinson, who is still recovering from a stress fracture in his left ankle.
According to SNY’s Ian Begley, Robinson is not expected to return until December or January, leaving the Knicks to adjust their lineup as they aim to compete at the top of the Eastern Conference.
Robinson underwent surgery in May, and while his recovery is progressing, the Knicks are prioritizing his long-term health. This is a significant blow to the team’s defense, as Robinson’s shot-blocking and rebounding have been key to their success in recent years.
Knicks’ Frontcourt Shuffle: Who Steps In for Robinson?
With Robinson out, the Knicks are exploring their options for filling the void at center. Former center Isaiah Hartenstein left for the Oklahoma City Thunder in free agency, leaving a gap in the frontcourt.
Precious Achiuwa is expected to step into the starting role, but head coach Tom Thibodeau has also suggested using power forward Julius Randle at center in small-ball lineups.
“We’ll look at some different things, because we have versatility — we could see Julius more at the 5,” Thibodeau said. He acknowledged that playing Randle at center wouldn’t be a long-term solution but could provide offensive advantages in short stretches.

The Knicks have usually been reluctant to play Randle as a small-ball center option, but with the amount of on-ball defensive talent they have on the perimeter, perhaps they feel confident they can execute it well. The combination of scoring and playmaking Randle can bring in the middle of the floor with a fully spaced floor has always been an intriguing concept.
Knicks Eye Trade Market for Reinforcements
To navigate the season without Robinson, the Knicks may look to bolster their frontcourt through trades. Names like Nik Richards, Walker Kessler, and Robert Williams have surfaced as potential trade targets, with the Knicks closely monitoring the market.
The Knicks would need to weigh how much they are willing to invest in a center who will likely spend most of their time coming off the bench behind Robinson. Considering the challenges associated with salary matching as a team operating over the luxury tax, the options may be limited.

While New York has added defensive depth by re-signing OG Anunoby and trading for Mikal Bridges, Robinson’s absence presents a significant challenge as they prepare to compete against Eastern Conference powerhouses like the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers.
