NFL Analyst Shares Bold Cowboys, Dak Prescott Prediction

Dak Prescott, Cowboys
Chris Jones-USA TODAY Sports

One of the biggest storylines in the NFL as we approach training camp centers around Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott. He is entering the final season of his contract and awaits an extension, but nothing has come to fruition.

The Cowboys could, in theory, lose both Dak Prescott and star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb next offseason. Both are set to hit free agency, as they await new contracts. Unlike his quarterback, Lamb has not taken part in any offseason activities this year.

The Cowboys are a team that many people will be keeping an eye on. They didn’t do much in the offseason, as they look, at best, to be as good as they were in 2023. Dak Prescott’s contract handcuffed them a bit, as an extension could help alleviate his $55.5 million cap hit.

However, Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report doesn’t believe an extension is coming. In fact, he believes that the Pro Bowler could be on the move ahead of the trade deadline this year.

Gagnon does add a caveat, that this bold prediction is predicated on the Cowboys falling out of playoff contention. But, his early bold prediction is that Dak Prescott will be traded and he suggests two potential suitors.

“Quarterbacks rarely move in the middle of seasons, but most of the ingredients are there in this case. Now, if a contender were to suffer a major injury at quarterback, or if a team like Las Vegas or Seattle finds itself in contention in spite of what it has at quarterback, a deadline blockbuster involving Prescott could come to fruition,” Gagnon wrote.

With the Philadelphia Eagles looking like the top dog in the NFC East, Dallas should be in the Wild Card mix again. But, what if things go off the rails early on and Jerry Jones looks to make changes?

That is essentially the reality Gagnon is speaking of. If the Cowboys are falling out of the playoff race, making a trade centered around Dak Prescott makes a lot of sense.

They would be able to receive a strong package of assets in return, helping them get in a better position for the future. But, it would essentially be a waiting of the white flag moment for the franchise, which is hard to envision Jones being okay with.
