The 2024 season is a big one for the New York Giants. The seats could be heating up for general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll. After a very successful first season in 2022, the team took a massive step back in 2023.
That led to some major changes on the coaching staff and roster. Defensive coordinator Wink Martindale and some of his positional coaches left. Offensive line coach Bobby Johnson was fired and replaced by Carmen Bricillo.
The roster underwent major changes as well. Along with firing Johnson, the offensive line was revamped in free agency. Jon Runyan Jr. and Jermaine Eluemunor are huge upgrades in the trenches.
Star running back Saquon Barkley departed in free agency and was replaced by Devin Singletary. With the No. 6 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the New York Giants selected LSU wide receiver Malik Nabers.
The offense should be much improved in 2024 with these changes. The defense should as well, with the acquisition of edge rusher Brian Burns being their biggest move. However, there is still one move that Big Blue should look to make with their defense ahead of training camp.
In the opinion of Aaron Schatz of ESPN, the team could use some reinforcements along the defensive line. He has suggested the New York Giants fill that void by signing veteran defensive tackle Lawrence Guy.
“The Giants’ biggest roster hole probably is tight end after the retirement of Darren Waller, but without a lot of strong tight ends available on the free agency market, it’s hard to recommend that as a big final move. Instead, the Giants have several places on their defense where they could add veteran depth. Guy spent the past seven seasons with the Patriots and can play against the pass and the run. He had an 83% stop rate last season on his run tackles, meaning that they stopped a successful offensive play 83% of the time. The Giants don’t want to be rotating out Dexter Lawrence very much, but Guy would give them more depth along with Jordan Phillips and Rakeem Nunez-Roches,” Schatz wrote.
Dexter Lawrence is arguably the best defensive tackle in the NFL now that Aaron Donald has retired. He will be on the field as much as possible, but the New York Giants could still benefit from adding more depth behind him.
Guy would be a solid pickup by the team. He is well-traveled, playing for four different franchises in his career and brings championship experience along with him. As Schatz noted, he has played several roles in his career, getting the job done as a pass rusher or space eater in the run game.
His versatility would be beneficial for defensive coordinator Shane Bowen. Guy is capable of moving all around the defensive front, as he has experienced playing defensive end and defensive tackle depending on the scheme.
Adding a veteran of that caliber at this point in the offseason could be a steal for the New York Giants.
