Tiger Woods Receives Exemption From PGA Tour for Future Events

PGA star Tiger Woods has been able to stick to his once-a-month prediction in recent outings. He has played in all three majors thus far this season, gutting it out despite sometimes less-than-ideal conditions.

Looking to ensure that we will see Tiger Woods on tour as much as possible in the future, the PGA has created a special sponsor exemption for him, and only him. The exemption is based on his “exceptional lifetime achievement” according to a memo the PGA shared, via ESPN.

With so much controversy about the future of the game, this is a great idea for the PGA Tour. Allowing Tiger Woods, still one of the most prominent figures in golf, to play in the eight signature events is best for business.

Because of his lack of participation, he wouldn’t normally qualify. But, the exemption will allow him to partake in the signature events with increased prize pools of $20 million in purses, limited fields and more FedEx points.

With 82 victories on the PGA tour, it will be nice to see Tiger Woods partaking in some of the bigger tournaments, should he be physically able. He hasn’t been playing as much competitive golf since being involved in a scary car wreck in February 2021.

Over the last three seasons, the 48-year-old has competed in only nine official PGA tour events. The Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club is the only non-major that Tiger Woods has participated in since returning to the Masters in 2022. It is an event he hosts and it benefits his foundation.

“I’ve only got one more tournament this season,” Woods said. “Even if I win the British Open, I don’t think I’ll be in the [FedEx Cup] playoffs. Just one more event and then I’ll come back whenever I come back.”

While we will only see Tiger Woods for one more tournament this season, we could see more of him in the future. If he plays in several signature events and places well, he could record enough FedEx points to play later in the season.
