As the New York Jets prepare for the 2024 season, what position will be up for grabs in training camp?
Coming into the 2024 season, there is a lot to like about the New York Jets. First and foremost, Aaron Rodgers is expected to be healthy and back under center. That will solve a lot of problems right then and there for the Jets, but this is a team that wants to compete and win this season.
One of the reasons why the Jets were able to hang in there at points last season was because of their excellent defense. However, they did lose a key player, safety Jordan Whitehead, to free agency this offseason.
Recently, Bleacher Report spoke about what the biggest training camp battle will be for the Jets. With Whitehead gone, they named the safety position as the one to watch. Here’s what they had to say.
That’s why rounding out the unit by finding their starting safeties is going to be a key storyline in training camp. Head coach Robert Saleh told the media it would be an open competition for the safety jobs with Chuck Clark, Tony Adams, and Ashtyn Davis serving as the primary competitors.
While we know that the New York Jets have arguably the best duo at cornerback in the NFL with Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed, the safety position is the one that is a bit of a question mark right now.
The good news for the Jets is that they have three players who will be competing for the two spots. Adams started 15 games for the team last season, and it would be surprising for him not to get a crack at being a starter right away again. Davis also saw some increased playing time as the season went on and looked pretty good.
The real wild card in the competition is going to be Clark, who missed all of last year because of injury after being acquired in a trade from the Baltimore Ravens. For the New York Jets, having three players they think can start is excellent, as it should bring out the best in all of them. Also, it will provide depth in the secondary, which is also a welcomed sight.
