The 2024 WNBA season has not been an easy one for the Indiana Fever and star rookie Caitlin Clark. The No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft has been met with a lot of physicality and hard-nosed defense at the beginning of her professional career, most recently at the hands of the New York Liberty.
On Saturday against the Chicago Sky, Caitlin Clark was a topic of discussion after taking an unnecessarily hard hit from Chennedy Carter. Sunday, she and the Indiana Fever were crushed again, but this time on the scoreboard.
In front of a massive crowd of 17,401 at Barclays Center, the home team New York Liberty destroyed the visiting Fever. A 104-68 rout was punctuated by potentially the worst game Caitlin Clark has had in her basketball career.
The Iowa product was 1-for-10 from the field, as she scored only three points. In her WNBA and collegiate career, the three points and 10 percent shooting were both the lowest she has recorded.
This has been a brutal stretch for the Indiana Fever. They have played more games than any other team in the WNBA, with 11 in the first 20 days of the season. Head coach Christie Sides admitted her team is worn down after the game.
“Their legs were shot. I mean, that’s where everything stems from, your legs, when you shoot the basketball — especially for 3s,” Sides said. “They’re shot, they’re gassed, so everything was a little short.”
To make matters worse, Indiana’s injury sheet grew on Sunday. Caitlin Clark exited the game with an ear injury after being bumped on a screen. Afterward, she did say that she was fine.
Center Aliyah Boston was also injured against the New York Liberty. She went down awkwardly with an ankle issue after being fouled. No official update has been provided, but Boston looked okay exiting the locker room.
Luckily for the Indiana Fever, they will now have some time to rest. They don’t play again until Friday, June 7th when they head on the road to face the currently winless Washington Mystics.
