Pittsburgh Steelers Receive Strong 2024 Offseason Grade

The 2024 NFL offseason was a busy one for the Pittsburgh Steelers. They underwent some major changes on their roster and coaching staff, as they are going to look much different on the field in 2024 than they have in recent seasons.

Their entire quarterback depth chart has been overhauled. 2022 first-round pick Kenny Pickett was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles while Mitchell Trubisky was released early in the offseason. Veteran Mason Rudolph signed a deal with the Tennessee Titans in free agency.

Replacing them are veteran Russell Wilson, who was released by the Denver Broncos, and Justin Fields. Fields was acquired in a trade with the Chicago Bears for pennies on the dollar, presenting two very low-risk, high-reward acquisitions.

One of the team’s top weapons from years past, Diontae Johnson, was traded to the Carolina Panthers as well. An exact replacement for him hasn’t been found yet, as the Pittsburgh Steelers were connected to a few wide receivers in trade talks.

But, they took a quantity approach to fill the void, signing Van Jefferson and Quez Watkins while drafting Roman Wilson in the third round. Expect trade rumors to continue as they seek a bonafide No. 2 option opposite George Pickens.

General manager Omar Khan also made a concerted effort to improve in the trenches. Along the offensive line, they used three selections in the 2024 NFL Draft to bolster depth, selecting Troy Fautanu, Zach Frazier and Mason McCormick.

Over at PFF, analyst Trevor Sikkema liked what the Steelers did this offseason. He gave the team a strong overall grade of B+ as a result.

“While a results-based analysis will have to wait, it’s hard to knock the Steelers’ aggressiveness in reshaping their quarterback room and offensive line,” Sikkema wrote.

With a stellar defensive unit that will be stronger with the addition of linebacker Patrick Queen, the Pittsburgh Steelers just need average offensive production to be a dangerous team. This is a contender-level defensive group, as the team’s ceiling will be based on the offense.
