The Los Angeles Dodgers are going to be a tough team to beat during the 2024 MLB season. Their roster is loaded with stars, as they have arguably the most talented team that has been assembled in recent years.

It was a busy offseason for the Dodgers, who made some huge moves. The biggest was signing two-way star Shohei Ohtani, formerly of the Los Angeles Angels. He signed the largest contract in baseball history, but he won’t be pitching this season as he recovers from injury.

The Dodgers’ pitching staff did receive a massive upgrade when they landed international superstar Yoshinobu Yamamoto. He wasn’t the only big addition to the starting lineup, as Los Angeles also swung a blockbuster trade with the Tampa Bay Rays for Tyler Glasnow.

The only thing that has held Glasnow back in his career has been injuries. When healthy, he has proven to be a Cy Young-caliber talent. Staying healthy, however, has been a challenge as the most starts he has made in a single season is 21.

So far so good in 2024 as he is looking to buck that trend. He has made four starts to this point and looked dominant. In his most recent outing against the Minnesota Twins, Glasnow actually made some MLB history.

In 7.0 innings, he struck out 14 Twins, giving up only three hits and zero runs. Minnesota’s lineup was overmatched as they could barely make contact against Glasnow. Most impressive was how quickly he took care of them.

Glasnow needed only 88 pitches to get through his seven innings of work as he was pounding the strike zone. According to OptaSTATS on X, that makes Glasnow the only pitcher ever to strike out 14+ batters since pitches began being tracked in 1988.

65 out of his 88 pitches against the Twins went for strikes, as he was efficient in finding the zone and not wasting pitches. That resulted in one of the most dominant outings to this point in 2024, as Glasnow’s Game Score of 85 beat his previous best this season by 17 points.

If Glasnow can stay healthy, he will certainly be in the running for the Cy Young award this season. Through four starts, he has thrown 24 innings with an ERA of 2.25 and a WHIP of 0.750. He has gone 3-0 and recorded 29 strikeouts, as both stats lead MLB along with his innings pitched to this point.
