The New York Yankees made a significant move this winter, securing outfielder Juan Soto from the San Diego Padres in a notable trade.
However, with Soto’s impending free agency after the upcoming season, the question arises: will he remain in the Bronx beyond 2024?
Despite being just 25 years old, Soto has already established himself as one of baseball’s premier talents. Represented by Scott Boras, the left-handed hitter boasts an impressive resume, including three All-Star Game appearances, a batting title, four Silver Slugger Awards, and a World Series championship with the Washington Nationals in 2019.
The Yankees have committed $31 million to Soto for the 2024 season, but retaining him beyond that will likely require a substantial financial investment. Prior to his trade to the Yankees, Soto turned down a lucrative 15-year, $440 million extension offer from the Nationals, hinting that his next contract could eclipse the $500 million mark given his youth and stellar performance.
Despite the Yankees’ interest in securing Soto long-term, the likelihood of reaching a deal before he hits free agency seems slim.
According to a report by MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, the chances of a long-term extension with the Yankees are uncertain.
“The Yankees made a big deal to acquire Soto this offseason, and while it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the three-time All-Star spend the next decade in the Bronx, it seems like a stretch to believe an extension is in the cards. Soto will be targeting one of the biggest free-agent deals in history, and even if the Yankees choose to engage in extension talks, the slugger and his agent, Scott Boras, are unlikely to offer any discounts prior to free agency.”
Even during his introductory press conference in December, Soto had to address questions about his contract status, expressing his focus on playing baseball while leaving negotiations to his agent, Boras.
While Juan Soto is accustomed to such speculation, the scrutiny may intensify in the media spotlight of New York. Nonetheless, Soto’s talent and potential make him a prized asset for any team, and the Yankees will undoubtedly strive to keep him in pinstripes for years to come.
