The Pittsburgh Pirates have emerged as a potential destination for experienced catcher Gary Sanchez, as per reports from Robert Murray of Fansided.

During the previous season, Gary Sanchez had stints with the San Francisco Giants, New York Mets, and the San Diego Padres. His tenure with the Giants was brief, as he didn’t make any appearances in the majors before being released.

Following this, he played three games with the Mets before they also parted ways with him. It was with the Padres that Sanchez found a niche as the personal catcher for Blake Snell, who clinched the Cy Young Award in the National League.

Blake Snell himself acknowledged Sanchez’s contributions in helping him secure the Cy Young honor. Additionally, Sanchez showcased his offensive prowess, boasting a 116 OPS+ in 72 games with San Diego, according to Baseball Reference.

Given the current point in the offseason, the Pirates could potentially acquire Sanchez on a cost-effective deal. This move could bolster their roster, particularly as they aim to position themselves as contenders for the playoffs in the near future.

If the Pirates find themselves in the playoff mix, Sanchez’s presence could prove valuable. Alternatively, if the team’s fortunes take a different turn, they could explore trading him at the deadline, should he maintain his productivity.

While there is interest from other teams, it appears that the Pirates are a prominent player in the Gary Sanchez sweepstakes.

As the 2024 season approaches, it remains intriguing to see where Sanchez will ultimately land. Despite his contributions to the Padres last year, it seems likely that he’ll don a different uniform in 2024, possibly needing to compete for his spot during spring training.
