Memphis Grizzlies superstar Ja Morant will undergo season-ending surgery following a right shoulder subluxation incurred during a training session on Saturday, as announced by the team. The team anticipates Morant’s full recovery in time for the 2024-25 NBA season.

The Grizzlies revealed in a statement that Morant had been experiencing persistent soreness and instability in his shoulder. An MRI scan uncovered a labral tear, leading to the decision for surgery.

The 24-year-old averaged 25.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 8.1 assists across nine games this season before his injury. His return from a 25-game suspension for firearm-related incidents had marked a strong phase for the Grizzlies, with Morant leading them to a 3-0 record in his first three games back and securing Western Conference Player of the Week from December 18 to 24.

NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Ja Morant, Memphis Grizzlies Updates

With Morant’s sudden exit, the Grizzlies, currently 13th in the Western Conference with a 13-23 record, face significant challenges. His absence is a major setback for a team that had started to regain momentum, winning seven of their last 11 games since Morant’s return on December 19 (including a 6-3 record in games he played).

Morant’s injury, coupled with starting center Steven Adams being out for the season, shifts the focus of the Grizzlies. The team now confronts a problematic reality, with playoff or even play-in prospects appearing dim. The remaining roster, including Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr., will have to step up, but the team’s depth issues, particularly on the wings and in the frontcourt, remain a concern.

The return of players like Marcus Smart and Luke Kennard offers some hope, but it’s unlikely to completely bridge the gap left by Morant’s absence. While still capable of challenging stronger teams, the Grizzlies might now have to recalibrate their goals and start planning for the next season.
