Mike McCarthy’s numbers may be numbered after the Dallas Cowboys suffered another disappointing playoff loss, and former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III thinks Deion Sanders would be a fine replacement.
After the Cowboys’ loss to the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card Round, Griffin took to social media to provide his explanation as for why Sanders would be the best pick for the next Dallas head coach.
Griffin hinted that Sanders would be an even better pick than Bill Belichick because “he knows what it takes to have a championship mindset” and because he is a “culture changer.”
As one would expect, Griffin has been lit up for his opinion, and deservedly so, because it doesn’t make much sense.
While Griffin didn’t explicitly say that Sanders would be a superior choice to Belichick, the fact that he mentioned Belichick and then said Sanders is what the Cowboys actually need means he actually believes Sanders would bring more of a culture change than Belichick. Meanwhile, Belichick won six Super Bowls and went to nine as head coach of the New England Patriots.
Plus, Sanders has never coached in the NFL, and he just went 4-8 in his first season at the University of Colorado, including going 1-8 in Pac-12 conference play. He has also adamantly stated he does not want to coach in the pros.
So, not only has Sanders not even proven that he can successfully coach on the collegiate level, but he doesn’t even have any interest in taking an NFL job.
Just because Sanders experienced Hall-of-Fame success as a player does not necessarily mean it will translate into coaching success, as he found out during his first season at Colorado.
Whether or not Belichick would actually be the right pick for the Cowboys is up for debate. He would almost certainly want plenty of control, and whether or not Jerry Jones would be willing to give him that is anyone’s guess. But one thing is for sure: Sanders, at this juncture of his young coaching career, would not be the best route for Dallas to take.
