The Chicago Bears have not yet made a decision on head coach Matt Eberflus, but that isn’t stopping them from expressing serious interest in University of Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh.
According to Tony Pauline of SportsKeeda, the Bears have shown “significant interest” in Harbaugh, who just led Michigan to a national championship on Monday night.
“While the Bears have indicated Matt Eberflus will return as head coach, I am told there is a possibility for change if the franchise believes it can reel in Harbaugh,” wrote Pauline. “The fact that the team owns the first pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and a second selection midway through the frame makes the Chicago job even more attractive.”
The Los Angeles Chargers, Las Vegas Raiders and Washington Commanders are also among those who seem intrigued by the idea of bringing Harbaugh aboard.
Last month, Michigan offered Harbaugh a 10-year, $125 million contract extension that includes a no-NFL clause, so it should certainly be interesting to see which direction Harbaugh decides to take in the coming weeks.
Eberflus has gone just 10-24 in his first two seasons at the helm in Chicago. However, there is reason to believe that he could end up staying put.
While the Bears got off to a dreadful 0-4 start in 2023, appearing to seal Eberflus’ fate early on, they proceeded to go 7-6 over their next six games to finish a respectable 7-10. Chicago improved on both sides of the ball as the season progressed, which has apparently made some in the Bears organization truly taking a liking to Eberflus.
Eberflus is expected to return as head coach, but Chicago has not yet made any formal decisions.
If Jim Harbaugh indeed becomes available, you have to wonder if the Bears will decide to pivot, especially considering they will almost surely be taking a quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft later this spring.
