San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy might not be the frontrunner for this season’s Most Valuable Player award, but he has garnered the admiration of Hall of Famer and franchise icon Steve Young.

In Young’s eyes, Purdy’s quarterbacking prowess stands out as elite in the league. He commended Purdy for his quick release and ability to efficiently run the offense, highlighting the quarterback’s knack for completing passes at an impressive rate.

He shared his thoughts on the KNBR “Tolbert and Copes” program.

“You have to be great at it in this league, but he is, like, elite. And that ball is out, and it’s out early. … The job of quarterback, the job of getting in the huddle, calling the play and then running the play, getting the most out of that play, figuring out how to get the ball out of your hands and make a gain, and to be nine-of-10, or 18-of-20, and all of a sudden that just opens up so much more of the offense.”

Purdy has played a pivotal role in leading the 12-4 49ers to secure the NFC’s No. 1 seed for the playoffs. According to ESPN statistics, as of Week 18, he leads all qualified NFL players with an outstanding 72.7 adjusted QBR, a stellar 113.0 passer rating, and an impressive average of 9.6 yards per pass attempt this season.

Additionally, he ranks second in passing touchdowns with 31, second in passing yards with 4,280, and third in completion percentage with 69.4%.

Earlier in the season, former Carolina Panthers star and one-time NFL MVP Cam Newton stirred up some controversy by referring to Purdy and others as “game managers.” Newton made a clear distinction between them and quarterbacks like Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens, Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs, and Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills, whom he regarded as “game-changing” quarterbacks.

As of Thursday afternoon, the odds favored Lamar Jackson as the overwhelming betting favorite with -20000 odds to win the MVP award, while Purdy was listed third with +3000 odds at that same time.

Although Brock Purdy may not be the MVP frontrunner, he still has an opportunity to make a significant impact in the upcoming postseason tournament. His performance could serve as a powerful statement, even if he doesn’t ultimately secure the MVP title.
