San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk appears to be signaling strong interest in joining the Washington Commanders, even as he has remained publicly silent on the matter. His subtle social media activity has caught attention across the NFL landscape, raising questions about his future and the potential fit with the Commanders organization.
Aiyuk’s Instagram account currently follows just five profiles, and two of them stand out in this context: the official Washington Commanders page and the account belonging to quarterback Jayden Daniels. This limited following list has fueled speculation that the veteran receiver is quietly expressing his preference for a move to the nation’s capital.
Washington has previously expressed some level of curiosity about acquiring Aiyuk, yet the team has stopped short of offering significant assets in exchange for him. Meanwhile, the 49ers continue to pursue a trade that would send the player to a new destination rather than opting for a outright release that could allow any club to sign him as a free agent.
NBC Sports Bay Area insider Matt Maiocco recently addressed the situation during a discussion, highlighting the receiver’s indirect message.
“He’s putting it out there, at least, that he wants to play for the Washington Commanders,” Maiocco said. “The question is, does it make sense for the Commanders to go down that road?”
Maiocco went on to express reservations about whether such a move would truly benefit Washington. He pointed out uncertainties surrounding Aiyuk’s current physical condition and ability to contribute immediately upon arrival. The analyst emphasized that even a successful signing would not guarantee the player’s return to form.
“And even if it did, and they did sign him, I don’t think it’s a certainty that he is ready to play football, win a roster spot, and be the player he was, or anywhere near the player he was, when we last saw him playing at a high level, which was in the 2023 season. As it turns out, it was [a long time ago],” Maiocco said.
His co-host, Jennifer Lee Chan, echoed some of those concerns while acknowledging Aiyuk’s undeniable talent. She noted the absence of any recent on-field evidence demonstrating his health and preparedness after sitting out the entire 2025 campaign. The lack of practice footage or game action has left many observers wondering about his readiness.
“Brandon Aiyuk is a talented football player, and a lot of teams in the league would love to have him,” Lee Chan said. “I would think he would want to play football. The 49ers would love for him to play football again.”
“They wanted him to. It’s not going to happen here in the Bay Area with his home team, but I think everybody wants the best for Brandon Aiyuk. And we don’t know [if he is intent on playing football],” she said.
Beyond the health and readiness questions, former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho has issued a direct caution to any franchise considering Aiyuk. He pointed to the ongoing drama that has surrounded the wide receiver in recent times, suggesting it could create complications for whichever team ultimately brings him aboard.
As the offseason progresses, the 49ers remain committed to resolving Aiyuk’s situation through a trade, hoping to secure value in return. For the Commanders, any potential pursuit would require careful evaluation of both the player’s desire to join their roster and his ability to perform at an elite level once again.
The coming weeks could prove decisive in determining where Aiyuk ultimately lands and whether his social media hints translate into an actual opportunity in Washington.
