The Red Sox sent 22-year-old right-hander Jedixson Paez back to Triple-A Worcester on Wednesday, one day after a rough first start in a Boston uniform.

The club recalled left-hander Raymond Burgos from Worcester as the corresponding move, giving the bullpen another arm who can cover innings.

“Boston Red Sox optioned RHP Jedixson Paez to Worcester Red Sox,” MLB.com shared.

Paez had been selected from Worcester on Tuesday so the Red Sox could skip Sonny Gray and give the veteran extra rest before a Saturday start in Baltimore.

The experiment lasted 3 2/3 innings. Seattle scored eight earned runs on 10 hits, two walks and two hit batters. Paez struck out three and threw 87 pitches, 55 of them for strikes, in a 9-6 loss that evened the three-game set.

“He struggled,” manager Chad Tracy said.

“I felt like maybe wasn’t able to land a ton of fastballs in the zone. As you watched the at-bats unfold, I just think that there was a lot of damage on soft pitches.”

Dominic Canzone opened the scoring with a first-inning homer. Randy Arozarena added a three-run shot in a five-run second. Julio Rodriguez and Cal Raleigh later doubled back-to-back, and Lazaro Montes collected his first big-league hit and later a homer.

Boston answered with a Mickey Gasper homer in the first and a late push that included a two-run shot by pinch-hitter Jahmai Jones, but the deficit never fully closed.

Paez, a Venezuela native signed by Boston in 2021, reached the majors this spring as a Rule 5 pick of the White Sox. Chicago used him in three early relief appearances, then returned him to the Red Sox in April.

He spent most of 2026 at Double-A Portland before a late promotion to Worcester, where he posted strong strikeout-to-walk numbers in three starts. The Red Sox had kept his workload modest most of the year and viewed him as a strike-thrower who could handle a spot turn.

The series opened Monday with a 9-8 Boston win. Wednesday’s finale is scheduled for 4:10 p.m. EDT at Fenway Park.

Burgos has already bounced between Worcester and Boston several times this season. In four major-league appearances he has a 5.84 ERA over 12 1/3 innings. The club wants him available as a long reliever after a stretch of short starts and extra innings.

Roster September also brought Isiah Kiner-Falefa back from the 60-day injured list and sent Tyron Guerrero to the 15-day IL with right shoulder inflammation. Brett Harris was designated for assignment to clear 40-man space when Paez first arrived.

The Red Sox entered the day 75-64 and third in the AL East. Their rotation has been patched together amid injuries, which is why a 22-year-old with limited Triple-A time got the ball on a weeknight at Fenway.

Paez will now try to reset at Worcester. Gray is lined up for Saturday. Burgos is in the bullpen for whatever Wednesday’s game requires.
