The future of Zion Williamson with the New Orleans Pelicans remains uncertain as industry insiders suggest that a pivotal meeting between the player and the team is essential this offseason.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, while the Pelicans are keen on retaining Williamson, the two parties’ outlook suggests a serious discussion is necessary.

“The last thing you want to do is trade Zion Williamson… and he just skyrockets, because he’s able to find help, he’s able to find that maturity, find that growth in his career. They want that to come in New Orleans,” Charania explained on the Pat McAfee Show.

Zion Williamson, New Orleans Pelicans Must Establish Clarity

However, he noted that the current situation might not be sustainable. “Both sides have to come together this summer and figure out exactly what that’s going to look like,” Charania said.

Williamson’s season was again marred by injuries, limiting him to just 30 games. The Pelicans announced that he would miss the remainder of the 2024-25 season due to a low back bone contusion sustained in a fall during a game on March 19. Before the setback, Williamson was averaging 24.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 5.3 assists.

The Pelicans find themselves at a crossroads, needing to make crucial decisions about their roster and strategy after a disappointing season.

“This summer, I will say that the Pelicans have decisions, as an organization, they have decisions they’re going to have to make. We’ve talked about the Suns evaluating everything? The Pelicans are going to be in the same boat. They have to look at everything, with the season they just had,” Charania added.

Zion Williamson’s Contract Adds to the Situation

The complexity of Williamson’s contract, which includes incentives tied to games played and fitness, along with multiple opt-outs, further complicates the scenario. His next salary guarantee kicks in on July 15 for the 2025-26 season, though none of the final three years of his contract are currently guaranteed.

Despite the challenges, the Pelicans are reportedly not considering waiving Williamson. Their options are narrowed down to either trading him or committing to another season in hopes of his full recovery and return to form.

The outcome of their summer discussions could very well shape the franchise’s direction for years to come.
